Open Technology Fund (OTF)
A US government-funded program supporting open source projects that advance internet freedom, censorship circumvention, privacy, and secure communications tools — particularly for people in repressive environments.
Sovereign Tech Fund (STF)
A German government-backed fund supporting the development, improvement, and maintenance of open digital infrastructure. Funds individuals and teams to work on foundational open source software that the internet depends on.
Google Season of Docs
A program that brings technical writers together with open source organizations to improve documentation. Organizations receive funding to hire technical writers for a set period.
Google Summer of Code
A global program where students and beginner contributors work on open source projects under the guidance of mentors from participating organizations.
Hacktoberfest
A month-long celebration of open source every October, organized by DigitalOcean. Participants complete 6 accepted pull/merge requests to earn rewards. Great entry point for first-time open source contributors.
LFX Mentorship (CNCF / Linux Foundation)
Structured mentorship program run by the Linux Foundation, primarily through CNCF projects. Three terms per year — Spring, Summer, and Fall. Mentees work on cloud-native and open source infrastructure projects.
MLH Fellowship
A 12-week remote fellowship alternative to traditional tech internships. Fellows contribute to real open source projects (or partner company projects) in pods of ~10, under expert mentors. Three tracks available — Open Source, Software Engineering, and Production Engineering (SRE).
Mozilla Fellowship
Annual fellowship for experienced technologists, researchers, creators, and advocates working toward a more open, trustworthy internet. Two tracks — Embedded (working with a host civil society org) and Independent (self-directed). Not student-focused; suited for mid-career and senior professionals.
NLnet Foundation Grants (NGI Zero)
Grants for individuals and organizations building free and open source technologies that contribute to an open, resilient internet. Funded through the EU's Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative. Covers software, hardware, standards, and research.
Outreachy
Paid remote internships for people subject to systemic bias and underrepresentation in tech. Runs twice a year (May–August and December–March). Open to non-students too.
Summer of Bitcoin
A global online summer internship program focused on introducing university students to bitcoin open source development and design. Students work with bitcoin open source projects under experienced mentors.
